We have created logins for children to access the British ‘Oxford Owl’ library, where they can access over 100 ebooks to practice reading.

If you can encourage your child to read for pleasure, they will reap the benefits. It might not seem like an essential task, but research shows that reading for pleasure can be directly linked to children’s success throughout school and even into adulthood.
Reading for pleasure opens up new worlds for children. It allows them to use their imagination to explore new ideas, visit new places and meet new characters. Interestingly, reading for pleasure also improves children’s well-being and empathy. It helps them to understand their own identity and gives them an insight into the world and the views of others.

I’ll share the login details on each class page shortly.

Spelling Bee

We’re happy to say that the children have settled in nicely after their 2-week holiday. They seem full of energy and extremely cheerful on the playground.

On the 20th of May, United Nations celebrates World Bee Day (https://www.un.org/en/observances/bee-day), and we want to use this as an opportunity to learn why “we all depend on the survival of bees” (UN, 2022).

Children will spend the morning sessions learning about the bees while engaging in cross-curricular activities. In the afternoon (12.00 pm), we plan to establish a tradition at BIJS – the annual Spelling Bee Contest! I’m sure children would love your support, and we would like to extend our invitation to attend the Spelling Bee contest (more details to follow).

A spelling bee is a contest to put spelling skills to the test. Pupils will be given words that they must attempt to spell correctly out loud in front of the judges (TBC). This will be done individually, with each student being asked to spell the given words. Once a player misspells a word, they are disqualified. This continues until we find our winner who has been able to spell all of their words correctly!

The Phase Leaders will post the Spelling Bee list on each year’s group ClassDojo page.

Putting on a spelling bee competition for kids can be a great way to motivate them to learn their spellings, and adds fun to the process.

Learning Environment

At ��Ƶ (BIJS), we believe that a well-organised and stimulating environment directly impacts teaching and learning quality and supports raising standards.

Classroom environments enrich and support the learning of all pupils. As well as being vibrant and welcoming, the classroom environment is a learning resource, the second teacher, a way of engaging pupils and building the class community. It can create a sense of ownership and be used to support and promote learning and celebrate pupils’ work.

With careful thought and planning, an effective classroom environment is an interactive resource supporting teaching, learning and assessment.

CORE STANDARDS

1. Objectives, success criteria and key questions are displayed and referred to in lessons. (These are important for pupils and enable adults learning with pupils to be clear about teacher expectations).

2. Prompts, ideas and good examples generated during lessons are displayed and referred to support future learning.

3. Key questions are displayed and used to trigger prior knowledge.

4. Curriculum displays include statements and questions to highlight key learning points.

5. Key words and technical vocabulary are displayed and discussed for a variety of curriculum areas. Please note that any collections of words or phrases are displayed and updated regularly to ensure vocabulary links to an appropriate learning context.

6. Vocabulary and definitions of words are referred to, discussed and used within teaching.

We will share more creative displays to celebrate our pupils’ learning as time progresses.

Hour of Code

We live in a world surrounded by technology, and computers are everywhere, transforming every industry on the planet. And we know that whatever field our children choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works.
But only 51% of all schools teach computer science. The good news is, we’re on our way to changing this! Our school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 4-10). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code.
With the Hour of Code, computer science has been on the homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo!, and Disney. Over 100 partners have joined together to support this movement. Every Apple Store in the world has hosted an Hour of Code, and leaders like former President Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote their first lines of code as part of the campaign.
Our Hour of Code is making a statement that ��Ƶ is ready to teach these foundational 21st-century skills. This is a chance to change the future of education in Lagos.
